Lazio vs AS Roma: Match Preview

Riccardo De Luca - Update /

It’s Derby Della Capitale weekend in Serie A. The first Rome derby of the 21/22 season is here on Sunday as Roma take on Lazio.

Roma needed a reactive win going into Sunday Derby Della Capitale and they got one on Thursday evening against a spirited Udinese side.

The game ended 1-0 to Roma thanks to a goal from Tammy Abraham, his first Olimpico goal in Serie A. All in all, it wasn’t a great performance from Roma, it wasn’t pretty but effective in the end. An ugly three points were needed after the defeat to Hellas Verona the Sunday before. It was a tired performance in my eyes, I don’t know if anyone would disagree with it. I felt also Roma tried to cruise through this game ahead of the game on Sunday without any problems and it backfired in the dying moments of the game.

Lorenzo Pellegrini, the club captain and the player who embodies Jose Mourinho Roma, will miss Derby on Sunday evening due to being sent off for two yellows against Udinese. In all honesty, the second yellow is very harsh, as he has eyes on the ball when jumping up for the header. He will be a massive loss for Roma and Jose Mourinho has some tinkering to do.

After a strong showing in the opening two rounds in Serie A, Lazio form has dipped dramatically in all competitions, and Maurizio Sarri‘s side is now winless in 4 games in Serie A and in Europe.

Two wins from two in the opening rounds of Serie A actions with 9 goals scored looked good for the blue side of Rome. Empoli were defeated 3-1 on matchday 1 and Spezia were dismantled back in Rome on matchday 2, 6-1. But the tides have turned, AC Milan won 2-0 at the San Siro in the key clash on matchday three.

A goalkeeping mistake in the Europa League by Thomas Strakosha cost Lazio points in the opening round of action in Europe in Turkey against Galatasaray. Back-to-back draws have followed against Cagliari and on Thursday early evening away at Torino. Ciro Immobile once again the hero for Lazio salvaging a late point.

Reina, Lazzari, Luis Felipe, Acerbi, Hysaj, Lucas Leiva, Milinkovic Savic, Luis Alberto, Pedro, Felipe Anderson, Immobile.

Form book goes out the window as cliché as it sounds in Derby matches, Roma will be looking for back-to-back wins after the defeat against Hellas Verona. Jose Mourinho and his squad will be looking for victory against a Lazio side who have struggled for form and have hit the buffers after a strong showing in the opening weeks in Serie A.
