The Portuguese coach wants a competitive roster but he clarified that this is just the beginning of an ambitious project. Mourinho praised his players after the away win in Turkey and did the same with the ownership of the club.

He is leading the team as everyone expected. Josè Mourinho is a commander ready to fight for his group and capable of changing the attitude of his players. His men are clearly following his directive although the first official match of the season has been tough at times.

The away win against Trabzonspor gives confidence to the group. But the next challenge against Fiorentina is just around the corner. Roma will face the Viola at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. The first Serie A clash of the season will tell us much more about the current status of the Giallorossi.

In a recent interview the Portuguese coach pointed out that there’s room for improvement and talking about the pre-season games he stated:

“I want us to control the game better with more intensity when we are in transition.”

The tactical aspect is relevant in football. Mourinho is implementing his style in a group that is slowly shaping to be as competitive as possible: “We are preparing the team to play differently compared with the recent years, but we need time albeit we improved a lot,” he said.

Will sporting director Pinto be able to provide him with a new talented midfielder to complete an impressive transfer window?

Mourinho would be happy to welcome another relevant player to his roster. The midfielder seems to be a top priority for Roma. Reportedly, the Giallorossi are looking for a pure playmaker capable of setting the pace of the game and quickly restart the offensive phase triggering lethal counterattacks.

Cristante and Veretout will be leading the midfield against Fiorentina and likely even in the Conference League second leg against the Turkish side. But the feeling is that Pinto and the Friedkins are still monitoring the market. If they find the right opportunity, they will probably invest to shape an even more competitive side.
