Roma vs Crotone: Match Preview

Marco Iacobucci Epp /

AS Roma are back in Serie A action looking to stop the rot in Serie A against an already relegated Crotone on Sunday evening.

A change of shape and playing with the handbrake off, we saw a different AS Roma on Thursday night in the Europa League Semi-final second leg against Manchester United. In a crazy game, Roma created 23 shots on goal and played one of the best games of football in over 2 months. A change back to a 4-2-3-1 from the 3-4-2-1 saw Roma on the front foot and attacking from out wide which has clearly been lacking in recent months.

Roma nearly pulled off the miraculous turnaround in Rome on Thursday night but was foiled by an excellent goalkeeping display by David De Gea. On another day we could have seen a tremendous comeback but it was not to be. Roma bows out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage only losing 2 games in Europe all season. Bar a crazy 45 minutes in Manchester it could have been a different story, but it has been an excellent European campaign.

Back to league matters on Sunday evening, Roma need to end the season on a high. It has not been the best of two months for Roma with just 11 points picked up from a possible 30 has seen Roma drop from top 4 contenders to scrambling for a top 7th position.

Crotone are the visitors to the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening, and they find themselves at rock bottom of the Serie A standings with 18 points from 34 games. Their fate was sealed last weekend with a 0-2 home defeat by Inter Milan. It has been a sorry first season back in the topflight with just 5 wins from 34 games and 85 goals conceded.

Crotone run of form in the last 6 games has been woeful, just 3 points picked up from a possible 18 with 1 win and 5 defeats. The sole win was the crazy encounter away at Parma where Simy was the hero with a double and Crotone took the points in a 7-goal thriller at the Stadio Ennio Tardini. The 5 defeats have come against Napoli (4-3) Spezia (3-2) Udinese (2-1) Sampdoria (1-0) and last weekend the 2-0 home defeat to Inter Milan which sealed the fate to Serie B at the first time of asking.

Serse Cosmi is now in charge in Crotone. He has been in charge since the 01st March 2021, after Giovanni Stroppa was sacked after a poor run of form. Cosmi has been in charge at Crotone for 10 games now in Serie A and has picked up 6 points at a rate of 0.60 points per game. 2 wins and 8 draws, the two wins have come against Torino (4-2) and Parma (4-3).

The key player to watch out for in the Crotone side:

29-year-old Nigerian striker Simy Nwankwo has been in excellent form in Serie A this season. He could find himself back in the topflight next season, he would have a lot of potential suitors. 19 goals and 2 assists from 34 Serie A games this season and Simy has averaged a goal every 134 minutes in the Serie A this season.

Simy form has blossomed in the last 10 games with 14 goals scored which include 4 doubles. The Nigerian striker has hit form at the right time of the season with potential suitors in the top 7 of Serie A eagerly watching him shine in a struggling side this season.
