AS Roma vs Lazio: Match Preview

Marco Iacobucci Epp /

This is the main course to a feast of Serie A football on Saturday evening as it is the final home game of the season for AS Roma, and they take on eternal city rivals Lazio in the Derby Della Capitale.

It was another good display from AS Roma in midweek against Serie A champions Inter Milan at the San Siro. The result was in vain as Inter Milan struck just before added time with a Romelu Lukaku goal to make it 3-1. For majority periods of the second half, AS Roma were the dominant side and on any other day could have taking home points from the San Siro.

But it was not to be, I can take Roma playing well and suffering in defeat. That performance overall on Wednesday night was refreshing, the switch to a more comfortable 4-2-3-1 has helped and Roma look more of an attacking threat going forward.

I have been impressed with Roma in the last few weeks, it looks more of a settled side with the setup. It was quite painful to watch Roma in the months prior. It was very stodgy and you could see Roma were suffering and giving up results to sides in Serie A they would be beating. Just hope this run of good performances can continue into the Saturday game and into the final game of the season away to Spezia.

Paulo Fonseca will be looking forward to ending the home part of the season with a win and finally claiming a scalp of the top 6. Fonseca’s record against Lazio is not great in Serie A, winless in 3 including two back-to-back 1-1 draws and a 3-0 defeat in January 2021. It will be good for him and the club that Roma can end the season on a high going into the summer of change.

Lazio are the “visitors” to the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday night and with a game in hand over everyone else, the club still harbour aspirations and breaking into the top 4. Currently, Simone Inzaghi’s side are in 6th position in the Serie A standings with 67 points from 35 games. Lazio are 5 points behind Juventus who are hovering outside the top 4 and 6 points behind Napoli who occupy the final spot in the league standings for UCL football.

Lazio run of form in the last 10 Serie A games is outstanding, 24 points from a possible 30 has seen Simone Inzaghi side propel from 7th to the fringes of the top 4 in a couple of months. With Roma poor form going one way, Lazio under Simone Inzaghi have gone the other way and have got vital results at the crucial parts of the season.

Crotone, Udinese, Spezia, Hellas Verona, Benevento, AC Milan, Genoa, and Parma were all dispatched. Before the Napoli defeat on Matchday 33 were on a run of 5 wins in a row. Fiorentina were the second side to defeat Lazio in the last 10 games. 2-0 in Florence dented Lazio late surge for UCL football for next season.

The Key player to watch out for in the Lazio side:

Ciro Immobile again for Lazio has delivered this season, 20 goals and 9 assists in 33 Serie A appearances. 123 goals in 175 Serie A appearances for Lazio has seen Immobile be one of the best natural strikers in Serie A over the past 10 years. Overall, his record for the club is 150 goals in 217 appearances with 42 assists.

Not bad for a striker who previously flopped in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and Spain with Sevilla. 6 goals in his last 5 games, including a late winner in the midweek round of action against Parma. Immobile is clicking into gear at the right time of the season with the European Championships just around the corner, he could be in contention for a starter come the summer.
