The Giallorossi halted Atalanta’s triumphant march after having suffered their quality and plays. When Gosens got a red card, Roma scored the equalizer and played with more confidence.

We watched another super performance from Atalanta and honestly the Lupi wouldn’t have had the possibility to react and score the equalizer if the referee hadn’t sent Gosens out in the 69th minute.

The team coached by Gasperini was the dominant side today at the Stadio Olimpico. Their quick plays and ability to press opponents in each area of the pitch are really remarkable. Roma, instead, sat back and tried to take advantage of a few counterattacks.

Although every game is made up of key moments that may change the outcome of a challenge, this clash between Roma and Atalanta has been particular in its development.

According to the stats, Fonseca’s side had more possession throughout the 90 minutes although Atalanta had several chances to score more goals and bring home the three points. This is the essence of vertical plays and the development of efficient offensive strategies.

Especially in the first half, Pau Lopez kept the Lupi afloat with a few important saves (6). Gasperini’s men have been in total control in the first 45 minutes (7 shots on target, 4 corner kicks, 2 big chances, 1 goal scored).

But football can be surprising at times. When everyone would have expected Atalanta’s second goal, Gosens was sent off and a few minutes after Cristante scored a stunner.

Talking about paradoxes Roma had the possibility to score the winner right at the end of the game. The Lupi clearly put Gasperini’s side under pressure in the final minutes without finding the back of the net. The team from Bergamo, instead, had the very last chance with a free-kick conceded by Ibanez who got a red card as well, but the clash ended 1-1.

It’s tough to play against these kinds of teams. We also made mistakes in key moments. We played a good game today but we faced a great side. We can’t forget that Atalanta have won 9 of the last 10 games. We decided to take a risk and press high not letting them build.

Paulo Fonseca said to DAZN

The feeling is that the team of the Italian capital is honoring the Serie A as much as possible although the two Europa League clashes against Manchester United represent the most important games of the season. The Portuguese coach hopes to lead the glorious club of the Eternal City to success although the British side is going to be a very tough obstacle.
