The Spanish goalkeeper has been decisive in the Europa League first leg but the overall performance of Fonseca’s side was remarkable as well. The Lupi have been compact since the beginning and they wouldn’t have deserved to finish the first half trailing.

When Pellegrini scored the equalizer, thanks to a huge mistake by Scherpen, Roma sat back giving total possession to Ajax and counterattacking when possible.

Roger Ibanez‘s stunner in the 87th minute gave Roma much more confidence for the return match at the Stadio Olimpico. The Brazilian defender had conceded a silly penalty to the Dutch side but he then put Roma ahead and with a privileged view of the Europa League semi-finals.

Another tough Europa League clash will take place next week in the Eternal City. With Spinazzola out injured and Pellegrini who suffered a tough hit on his right foot, Fonseca will be forced to give maximum priority to the international stage from now on.

Roma’s chances to reach a Champions League spot through the domestic league are not much, but the performance of the Lupi on the international stage gives hope to the fans of the glorious club of the Italian capital.
