The Giallorossi defeated the Ukrainian side again and got access to the Europa League quarter-finals. Roma had many goalscoring opportunities in the second half.

Paulo Fonseca seemed to be very satisfied with the performance of his group in the return match against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Giallorossi comfortably managed the advantage collected at the Stadio Olimpico last week and punished the Ukrainian side with lethal counterattacks.

Borja Mayoral clearly made a difference for the Lupi. The Spaniard scored a brace today and reached 7 goals in 10 matches during the current international campaign.

It was important to start the match well without conceding goals in the first 30 minutes. Shakhtar managed the game but we defended well. Then, in the second half, we had more possession as well as goalscoring opportunities.

Paulo Fonseca said to SKY Sport after Shakhtar Donetsk-Roma: 1-2

Although Castro‘s side managed possession throughout the 90 minutes, both teams shoot on target 4 times each with Roma being very dangerous inside the box (shots 3 vs 9).

  • Ball possession: 64% – 36%
  • Total shots: 8 – 9
  • Big chances: 1 – 4

With today’s Europa League mission completed, the Portuguese coach is already focused on the next tough Serie A clash against Napoli. The Giallorossi may be tired on Sunday but that match could be a great opportunity to get back on track for a Champions League spot.
