The Giallorossi played a sloppy Europa League match against CSKA Sofia. Fonseca played Smalling for the first time this campaign and the defender showed his quality once again.

The team’s performance was not an exciting one. Roma’s second Europa League match will never be remembered as one of the best matches under Paulo Fonseca’s management.

The Portuguese coach reshaped the starting 11 heavily to face CSKA Sofia but his team was surprised by the pressure and physicality of the Bulgarian team.

Chris Smalling played his first match of the 2020-21 campaign with the Giallorossi. The British defender led the operation in defense as he had done last season, a key presence in the three-man defensive package.

56 minutes for the defender from London. 4 clearances and 44 touches with great accuracy and with the consistency of a superior player. His physical condition is not perfect yet but his vision, positioning, and ability to intercept the opponents make a difference.
