The Portuguese coach clarified that the British defender is a key player for his team. Fonseca wants Smalling. Roma only has three centre-backs.
The coach of the Giallorossi has been waiting for the development of an endless negotiation. Chris Smalling is a priority for Roma and the British defender is waiting for good news from the Eternal City as well.
Reportedly, he wants to begin a new adventure at Roma, but Manchester United has been a tough negotiator. The Red Devils are unwilling to lower Smalling’s price-tag but the management of the Lupi has to do something more to make Fonseca happy.
When asked if Kumbulla can be enough for the backline of the Giallorossi, Paulo Fonseca clearly stated:
It’s important that he [Smalling] gets back here.

Roma is, therefore, ahead of a key week. The management of the Giallorossi must do everything possible to finalize the deal for the defender and also bring Milik to Trigoria. They are two key players to shape an ambitious team.
