The Giallorossi are fighting for a Champions League spot and Fonseca believes the qualification to that competition is Roma’s main goal of the season.
The club is moving on the right path. Gianluca Petrachi finalized very good acquisitions last summer and the arrival of the Portuguese coach in the eternal city is definitely providing great benefits to the Giallorossi.
Paulo Fonseca is refining his football system and thanks to a few changes, he may have found the right balance on the pitch. Although the Lupi played several matches without 7-8 injured players, they are currently sitting on the fourth position of the Serie A standings just 7 points behind Juventus and Inter.
“Our first goal is to end in the top 4 to qualify for the Champions League. But I don’t change my mind. By strengthening this team, I believe we can win something within the duration of my contract,” Fonseca said to the Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Portuguese coach is still only focused on the qualification to the next edition of the Champions League but Roma’s fans dream big. In the last 8 Serie A matches, the Giallorossi collected an average of 2.38 points per game and have 11 points more than the previous year.
If in the January transfer window Petrachi will be able to find the right players to strengthen the roster, Fonseca may be happy to change the club’s main goal of the season. Juventus and Inter are not invincible and albeit Lazio have been doing amazing things, Roma may unexpectedly find themselves competing for the biggest trophy.
