The Italian sporting director surprised everyone in the last week of the transfer market. Petrachi brought in the club three top players.
Roma needed something more than just new acquisition. Paulo Fonseca was waiting for a new centre-back albeit even a left-winger and a striker would have been necessary. Gianluca Petrachi made not one, not two, but three final purchases to revolutionize the team.
Two players moved from Manchester United while the striker joined the Lupi from Atletico Madrid.
CHRIS SMALLING (on loan for €3 million):
The English defender is going to strengthen Fonseca’s backline. The Portuguese coach was waiting for a new physical and fast defender. The 29-year-old from London has a great international experience having played for several years with the Red Devils. In the 2018-19 campaign, he made 34 appearances and scored 1 goal.
HENRIKH MKHITARYAN (on loan for €3 million):
The Armenian star joined Roma at the very last minute. The 30-year-old attacking midfielder is a force of nature, a player able to change a match with a touch or an assist. He will operate on the left offensive flank and he will be in charge of providing many ‘sweet chocolates‘ to let Edin Dzeko score many goals. He made 39 appearances in the past campaign and scored 6 goals and 7 assists. He is a great addition to Fonseca’s roster, a player who will definitely help Justin Kluivert on that side of the pitch.
NIKOLA KALINIC (on loan for €2 million):
The 31-year-old from Solin (Croatia) will definitely make a great contribution to the offensive phase of the Lupi. Although Dzeko is the starter for Fonseca, Kalinic will play several times as well. The Croatian striker knows Serie A very well having played at Fiorentina and Milan for a few years. In the 2018-19 campaign, he made 24 appearances at Atletico Madrid and scored 4 goals and 1 assist.
Gianluca Petrachi made three great acquisitions to revolutionize Roma. The Giallorssi are more competitive at this time. But Paulo Fonseca is now leading a group that must get back to the Champions League. This is his mission, this is the main goal of the club as well.
Roma’s sporting director spent less than €10 million to bring Smalling, Mkhitaryan, and Kalinic to the eternal city. Now they have to make a difference.
