Rick Karsdorp is set to leave Feyenoord after the Dutch champions agreed to sell the defender to AS Roma. The 22-year-old, who had a contract at De Kuip until mid-2021 will join the Serie A side on 1 July, after agreeing terms on a five-year deal.

The move sees Karsdorp leave the club he has been with since boyhood. He arrived at Varkenoord as an E pupil, going on to make his senior debut in 2014. He became a regular over the next two seasons under head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Karsdorp made 101 appearances in competitive matches over three seasons at Feyenoord, scoring one goal. In his time at De Kuip he won an Eredivisie title (2017) and a KNVB Cup (2016), as well as making his debut for the Dutch national team. He currently has three caps.

‘Rick has been excellent at Feyenoord,’ said technical director Martin van Geel on Wednesday. ‘He is a player we’ve brought through our system who has become a first-team regular, playing an important role in the cup and title successes. His development has also turned him into a Dutch international.’

Karsdorp’s is the most lucrative outgoing transfer in the history of the club, trumping the deal that saw Jordy Clasie move to Southampton in 2015. ‘We are losing a good player in Rick, but this is a deal we can accept,’ said Van Geel. ‘It’s nice for Rick to be able to continue his career at a great club in a top league like Serie A and we wish him lots of success there.’
