Roma 3-1 Juventus: Grazie Roma

A brilliant team performance from Roma this evening in a packed Stadio Olimpico, this result put the Champagne on ice for Juventus 6th straight Scudetto.

Juventus took the lead when Mario Lemina tapped home from close range. Daniele De Rossi equalised just 4 minutes later. 2 second half goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan gave Roma the three points and reclaimed second spot and sit 4 points behind Juventus with two games to go.

Kwadwo Asamoah had the first opportunity in a high octane start to the game. 6 minutes into the game a Miralem Pjanic corner was poorly cleared by the Roma defence. The ball fell to Asamoah who hit a vicious first time effort which smashed off the post and the rebound was cleared away by the Roma defence.

Juventus took the lead after 20 minutes, a defence splitting ball over the top from Stefano Sturaro found Gonzalo Higuain who but it on a plate for the un marked Mario Lemina to tap home from close range. Gonzalo Higuain then had a long range effort which was comfortably saved by Szczesny. It was becoming a bit too easy for Juventus in the opening of the first half.

Roma equalised just a matter of minutes later, a corner from the right was headed goalwards by Kostas Manolas, Gianluigi Buffon parried into the path of Daniele De Rossi who took opportunities to bundle the ball into the back of the net. The home crowd was lifted after that goal.

Leandro Paredes went for the Hollywood goal with an effort from 35 yards out which flew into the Curva Sud. At the other end Higuain took aim from distance with a left footed scorcher was punched away by Szczesny.

Mohamed Salah and Stephan El Shaarawy had weak efforts late on in the first half which was comfortably clutched by Gianluigi Buffon.

Wow a helter skelter of a first half, 100mph high tempo football. I honestly don’t think it will last the whole 90 minutes. Roma came out of the blocks the quicker but Juventus got hold of the game and took a deserved lead with the Lemina goal which was bad defending all together from Roma. Both centre backs were at fault, Fazio lost his man and Manolas was ball watching and didn’t pick up the run of Mario Lemina and it was costly.

But fair play to Roma, they fought back with a quick repost with the Daniele De Rossi poacher finish from close range and that goal lifted the crowd. With the set up they are missing the target man of Edin Dzeko who is missing with an injury, in his place Diego Perotti and Stephan El Shaarawy have struggled to assert themselves on the game.

Roma took the lead on 55 minutes and it was a bit of a freak goal, a quickly taken free kick after a Higuain offside found El Shaarawy on the left hand side and curled a low effort into the bottom corner. Gianluigi Buffon was waiting for the ball to go out of play for a goal kick and squirmed in off the post and into the back of net.

Roma added a third and what a strike it was from the Ninja Radja Nainggolan, a lovely one-two between Salah and Nainggolan and the Belgian international rifled an effort past Gigi Buffon and celebrated in front of the Juventus fans.

Leonardo Bonucci had a glancing header go wide from a Mario Mandzukic cross as Juventus were chucking bodies forward. Roma very happy to sit back and soak up the pressure in the final stages of the game. Higuain came close to adding a second for Juventus in stoppage time, Higuain rolled Fazio but Szczesny stood tall and blocked the effort.

A fantastic team effort from every single player this evening from Roma, backs and against the wall early in the first half and excelled in the second half. Credit is due to the Roma players and Luciano Spalletti who got his tactics spot on and changed it when Juventus chucked more bodies on to grab a goal to make the game interesting.

The only sour taste will be Francesco Totti who was introduced in stoppage time for a few minutes of a cameo. But soon as the final whistle blew when his fellow Roma players were celebrating he was first down the tunnel and with a sorry high five to one of the Roma coaching staff. Luciano Spalletti like he said last week cannot win, he get stick from the press and fans when he doesn’t play Totti and when he does in a token gesture. The result mattered more for Roma in the race for second place.
