Chievo 3-5 Roma: Roma fightback in eight goal thriller

Edin Dzeko - AS Roma

A crazy game of football on Saturday evening, it was a tale of two halves for Roma who were appalling and defended dreadfully but stepped up their game in the second half to take home the three points. Lucas Castro opened the scoring for Chievo with a close range volley. Stephan El Shaarawy equalised after poor Chievo defending. Roberto Inglese headed home unmarked to restore the lead. Mohamed Salah equalised just before half time. Quick goals from El Shaarawy and Salah made it 4-2. Edin Dzeko made it 5 then moments later Roberto Inglese added his second, Chievo third and the game eighth of the game in the dying moments of the game.

Leandro Paredes had a free kick from 30 yards comfortably saved and straight into the arms of Stefano Sorrentino. Ivan Radovanovic took aim from distance but his effort went wide of the upright. Excellent interchange down the right hand side by Salah and Strootman, the Egyptian winger curled a lovely effort but Sorrentino stood tall and parried Salah effort behind for a corner with a brilliant save. Celebrated the save afterwards.

Chievo took the lead after 14 minutes, a cross in from the right was flicked on to Lucas Castro who hit a sweet volley past Sczcesny in the Roma goal. Poor marking from the cross by the Roma defence. Kostas Manolas didn’t pick up the second ball and Rudiger didn’t pick his man. Stupid goal to concede.

Confidence was flowing through this Chievo side after going 1-0. A long ball from defence found the eager running of Roberto Inglese who had the beating of Kostas Manolas, Inglese played in Valter Birsa who hit a low angled drive wide of the far upright.

Roma equalised after 28 minutes and capitalised on poor Chievo goalkeeping and defending. Sorrentino clearance was intercepted by Fazio who headed clear and found the off the ball run of Stephan El Shaarawy who rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net.

Chievo restored their lead and once again it was from a cross from outside. Valter Birsa with a pinpoint cross on to the head of Roberto Inglese who had a free header and made no mistake. Mohamed Salah had a free header at the back post parried away by Stefano Sorrentino, either side of the veteran goalkeeper it was 2-2.

Mohamed Salah made amends for his miss by grabbing the equaliser just minutes later. Salah like most of the season cut in from the right hand side on his left and curled a left footed effort which took a deflection of Massimo Gobbi and found its way into the back of the net. Sorrentino wrong footed after the Gobbi deflection.

Crazy first half in the Rain in Verona, 4 goals in a very open attacking game of Italian football. Roma defense all over the place and was undone from crosses out wide for both of the Chievo goals which is a worrying sight to see. Both Kostas Manolas and Daniele De Rossi have been below par and miles of the pace. Manolas was at fault for the first goal for not reacting to the second ball after the knockdown to Castro. Also was nowhere to be seen for the Inglese goal as him and Fazio were off the pace and ball watching. Inglese ghosted in and made no mistake with a close-range header.

At the other end, Roma looks good going forward against the Chievo Diamond formation, exploiting the gaps out wide which they did for both of the goals. El Shaarawy done well against the high defensive Chievo backline to get onto Federico Fazio headed clearance to equalize for Roma. Salah has had a brilliant first half down the Roma right, gave the aging Chievo defense especially Massimo Gobbi at left back a lot of problems. He was rewarded with a well-deserved goal.

Roma took the lead for first time in the match just before the hour mark, Kevin Strootman with an excellent defence-splitting pass to Stephan El Shaarawy who broke the offside trap and hit a low passed finish into the bottom corner.

After some Chievo pressure where Roma had to deal with a lot crosses from deep to the back post, Roma broke out of their bunker and played keep ball in the Chievo half, a lovely team move which I think included up to 30 passes found Edin Dzeko, who on the left-hand side of the 18 yard box hit a low angle drive which was brilliantly tipped behind for a corner by Sorrentino. From the resulting corner, Kostas Manolas had a weak header which left Sorrentino scrambling low to make a save.

Roma added a 4th and it was Mohamed Salah with his second, both wingers with the brace. Dzeko played a lovely through ball to Salah who placed a lovely effort into the bottom corner. Salah then moments later went close to adding to his hattrick by a back post header over the crossbar.

Edin Dzeko added a 5th to the Roma scoreline with a brilliant long-range effort into the top corner from distance. His 28th Serie A goal of the season. Francesco Totti came on with 5 minutes remaining. Chievo then scored to make it an interesting last couple of mins, a corner was flicked to the pack post where Roberto Inglese made no mistake from literally a yard out.

A crazy end of season game of Italian football in Verona, no biscotto in sightJ. A tale of two halves for Roma who were appalling in the first half and defended like drains. They redeemed themselves in the second half and played brilliantly fast counter attacking football. Both Roma wingers Mohamed Salah and Stephan El Shaarawy were unplayable against a diamond formation on where Roma were exceptional on capitalising space in the wide areas.

The ball is now in Napoli court as they take on Fiorentina in the Saturday night game in the race for second place. Juventus take on Crotone on Sunday afternoon needed a win to take the Serie A title. If Juventus slip up it will go to the final day. Us Roma fans can dream can’t we.
