The CIES Football Observatory presented an interesting research in which the percentage of matches ended with a three-goal gap or over was highlighted.
CIES monitored 31 top division European leagues as well as UEFA’s Champions League and Europa League. The analysis showed that the most important international competition for clubs, the UEFA Champions League, is among the most unbalanced competitions.
In reference to the big-5 leagues, CIES confirmed that Ligue 1, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Bundesliga are also in the first half of the most unbalanced competitions.

The increasing wealth gaps between participating teams is clearly the main issue to be faced. The distribution of financial (TV rights) and human (transfer market) resources at both national and international level are the solutions to re-balance these competitions.
