Pescara 1-4 Roma: The Mohamed Salah show

Roma defeated Pescara 4-1 on Monday evening which meant Pescara short stay back in Serie A is over as they were relegated back to Serie B.

Two goals at the end of the first half from Kevin Strootman and Radja Nainggolan gave Roma the lead on the game. Roma added two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half from Mohamed Salah. Ahmad Benali who used to play for Rochdale in league 1 in the Uk pulled one back with the consolation goal.

Mohamed Salah had an early goal disallowed for offside but on the replays showed he was in an onside position. At the other end on loan PSG Striker Bahebeck had a deflected effort which looped over Szczesny for a corner kick.

Stephan El Shaarawy then wasted two chances from close range, first effort straight at the on rushing Pescara goalkeeper after a quick break away, second just angled wide after a low cross in on the right hand side from Antonio Rudiger.  Edin Dzeko then had a header across goal fire over from 10 yards out.

Roma were just attacking Pescara at will in the opening 20 minutes, Dzeko had a shot smothered from close range by Fiorillo.  Kevin Strootman fired wide on the right hand angle of the area. Radja Nainggolan had a chest and volley which crashed off the crossbar from inside 18 yard box.

Jean-Christophe Bahebeck was causing problems on the Roma backline and squandered to chances to give Pescara the lead. First chance he got in front of Rudiger out wide and Szczesny had to race out of his goal to smother the effort. Just moments later Bahebeck broke the offside trap and failed to capitalise on the opportunity and once again Szczesny came out and deflected the effort for the corner.

Roma were clinical just minutes before the half time as they went 2-0 in a matter of moments. Leandro Paredes played a fantastic defence splitting ball to Stephan El Shaarawy who was very unselfish and passed to Kevin Strootman to open the scoring. Moments later it was 2-0, Mohamed Salah used his express pace to break on the right hand side, played an over hit cross to Dzeko who then found Radja Nainggolan who made no mistake.

Roma had to be patient in the first half against a Pescara side who were sitting deep and hitting Roma on the counter attack. The ending to the first half was perfect for Roma, two quick first half goals and it definitely changed the mood of the coach and the players going into the half time interval.

Roma added a third just minutes into the second half, a lung busting run from left back by Emerson who played in Stephan El Shaarawy, a cross in the left found in Mohamed Salah who curled a lovely effort into the bottom corner.

Benali fired over from close range as Pescara cut through Roma down the right hand side, Salah then was a bit too unselfish to Edin Dzeko who couldn’t add a 4th for Roma as the Pescara defence got back into time to blunt the attack.

Roma added a 4th with a rapid counter attack, a short Pescara corner was picked up by Mohamed Salah who broke with pace and played in El Shaarawy. Who then repaid the favour unselfishly back to Salah to add his second and for El Shaarawy a hat-trick of assists.

Edin Dzeko caused a bit of stir while being substituted for by Luciano Spalleti for Clement Grenier. Dzeko did not look happy and stormed down the touchline without going to the Roma dugout. Gianluca Carpari forced a smart fingertip save out of Szczesny with a brilliant curled effort. As the Polish goalkeeper was looking to keep his clean sheet in tact

Pescara pulled one back after 82 minutes with a consolation goal from Ahmad Benali who ghosted in unmarked to tap home after a redirected cross from the right hand side. Pescara came a post away from added a second, left back Biraghi rattled the post with a free kick from 25 yards out which had Szczesny a bit worried.

Roma won and didn’t really need to hit 4th or 5th gear as they played with the handbrake on. Went 4-0 up and took of Dzeko for Grenier which led the Bosnian striker to hit coach Spalletti with a volley of abuse. Spalletti looked to shut up shop and not go for the kill and decided to sit on his 4-0 lead and got punished by conceding a stupid goal and nearly conceded another when Biraghi free kick hit the woodwork.

This was a much needed win after Napoli dropped points and extends the lead to 4 points going into a tough next couple of weeks starting with the Rome derby on Sunday lunchtime. Games coming thick and fast.
