Roma made it back to back Serie A wins on Sunday evening and jumped back into second place in the Serie A table.
It was a struggle at first for Roma as they struggled against Eusebio Di Francesco high pressing counter attacking Sassuolo side. Gregory Defrel gave Sassuolo the early lead, Leandro Paredes hit back with a quick reply. Mohamed Salah netted from close range on half time to give Roma the slender lead. Edin Dzeko added a lovely third goal past the hour to give Roma the three points going into the International break.
Mohamed Salah had two a double chance to give Roma the lead, his first effort was well saved by Andrea Consigli and his second was into the side netting. Sassuolo then cut Roma open down the right hand side, Domenico Berardi played a lovely cross which got past the outstretched Antonio Rudiger and Gregory Defrel at the back post fired over.
Sassuolo took the lead after 8 minutes, once again Sassuolo broke with pace down the left hand side, Berardi crossed in for Defrel who fired into the top corner after a Matteo Politano dummy. Roma equalised on 15 minutes, after good work down the right hand side from Mohamed Salah he played a lovely pass to Leandro Paredes who hit a lovely low effort into the bottom corner.
Emerson smashed the cross bar from the angle of the 18 yard box after a cross from Radja Nainggolan. Politano then had a 1 on 1 effort well saved by the on rushing Szczesny. A quick free kick from Emerson found Kevin Strootman in aches of space down the left hand, the Dutch man played a lovely cross into Antonio Rudiger who headed over from inside of the six yard area.
Sassuolo broke again with pace causing Roma problems, Alfred Duncan broke with speed and crossed in for Defrel who had to improvise with a smart back-heel which was well smothered by Szczesny. Matteo Politano was had an excellent first half causing Emerson problems, cut in from the right hand and hit a dipping effort which Szczesny done well to tip over the crossbar.
Roma took the lead in half time stoppage time, Federico Fazio played a lovely through ball to Stephan El Shaarawy which was dummied by Radja Nainggolan. El Shaaraway had his effort saved by Consigli but Salah pounced and bundled home from close range. That goal left Sassuolo coach Eusebio Di Francesco frustrated on the touchline.
Early chances from both sides in the opening minutes in the second half, Defrel volleyed wide from a Politano cross. Then Roma hit Sassuolo on the counter attack with Strootman and Salah, the latter fired wide from just outside of the area with a low angle drive.
Edin Dzeko who came on a second half substitute on the hour for Bruno Peres had two opportunities to add a third goal for Roma. Dzeko headed over from close range, then had a volley smartly saved by Consigli from a Paredes corner.
Roma added a third on 67 minutes, a lovely one-two between Strootman and Dzeko. Dzeko out muscled his defender and made no mistake from close range. Dzeko then missed another chance for Roma after Mohamed Salah capitalised on a poor pass out from the Sassuolo defence, Dzeko fired his shot straight at Consigli.
Alessandro Matri as an early second half substitute for Gregory Defrel fired over from just outside of the area. Matri capitalised on a Fazio defensive error, the ball was recycled back to Matri who fired high over the Roma crossbar. Emerson had the freedom of the right hand side, broke from the halfway line and hit a low effort across the ball went wide of Consigli goal.
A tale of two halves in Roma home win over Sassuolo, struggled against Sassuolo high pressing in the first half. Gregory Defrel gave the Roma back line a lot of problems. His substitution early in the second half was a blessing. A smart move from Luciano Spalletti to move to a 4-3-3 half way through the second half to match Eusebio Di Francesco side and reaped the rewards in a comfortable second half performance.
