A much needed three points from Roma this evening away in Sicily at relegation threatened Palermo. A rotated squad with Thursday game in mind gave a professional performance after 4 defeats in 5. Goals from Stephan El Shaarawy, Edin Dzeko and Bruno Peres gave Roma the win.
Palermo had an early goal chalked off as Illija Nestorovski angled drive squirmed under the body of Szczesny at the near post. On replays it shows that the Macedonian striker strayed into an offside position. Linesman raised the offside flag as the Palermo players were celebrating.
Roma took the lead after 22 minutes slightly against the run of play, Clement Grenier with a lovely first time cross found Stephan El Shaarawy who made no mistake with a first time volley from close range. The confidence was flowing through El Shaarawy as he went close to adding a second. Drive at goal and a curled effort just past the upright
Roma had a golden chance to double their lead from an attacking set piece, Leandro Paredes played in a lovely free kick which found Antonio Rudiger who could only volley over the crossbar from closerange. Leandro Paredes then had an effort from distance which whistled just wide of the upright.
Radja Nainggolan missed an absolute sitter of a chance to double Roma lead just before the half time interval. Roma hit Palermo on a swift counter attack, Clement Grenier broke from deep and played in Nainggolan who went side footed and dragged his effort wide.
A bit of a disjointed opening to the game for Roma, conceded a sloppy goal which was then ruled out for offside. But got better after Stephan El Shaarawy goal thanks to a brilliant assist from Clement Grenier. Honestly Roma should be out of sight in this game, wasted quite a few chances late on in the second half. Hopefully that doesn’t come to bite them, an early Roma goal in the second half will put this game in doubt for Palermo.
Roma started stronger in the second half and wasted yet another chance to double the lead, another brilliant first time cross from Grenier found El Shaarawy at the back post but his close range effort was well smothered by Fulignati. Palermo almost equalised after a poor mistake from Antonio Rudiger, Alessandro Diamanti a second half sub, struck a low angled drive which was brilliant parried away by Szczesny.
Leandro Paredes had a free-kick from just outside of the area deflect wide of the Palermo wall, which did its job. From the resulting corner, Paredes played in a deep corner which found Federico Fazio who guided his header wide of the Palermo goal. Edin Dzeko a second half sub wasted a chance from close range as he fired over the crossbar after Fulignati parried a Bruno Peres cross shot.
Alessandro Diamanti was causing the Roma defence a lot of problems with his crosses from the left hand side, two crosses caused the Roma backline problems. Second cross had to deal brilliantly at the near post by a diving Federico Fazio.
Roma added a second on the 75th minute and it was a much needed goal after a bit of Palermo pressure. Radja Nainggolan played a defence splitting ball over the top to Edin Dzeko who calmly side footed past onrushing Palermo keeper. Roma added a third in stoppage time, a goal once again on the counter attack. Kevin Strootman broke from deep and played in Bruno Peres who finished calmly to add gloss to the scoreline.
This was a much needed away win at relegation threatened Palermo, it was a professional performance, a bit wasteful in time. The pressure was on Roma to get a result after Napoli winning at home to Crotone and they delivered. This win will give Roma confidence going into Thursday Europa League game against Lyon believing they can turn around a 2 goal deficit.
