Roma managed to show improvement from their midweek Champions League failure by securing a satisfying 4-2 win over Palermo in Sicily on Sunday.
The capital city club bounced back from their 3-2 Champions League group stage defeat to BATE Borisov on September 29 with a pretty impressive performance against the Rosanero, which saw Gervinho bag a brace, but still had trouble keeping a clean sheet. Rudi Garcia’s men bested their hosts in almost all aspects of play, including possession and pass success, though they had to rely on an ample amount of goals due to their lasting problems in defense.
Miralem Pjanic opened scoring right away in the second minute of the clash after sliding a pass from Alessandro Florenzi into the net, while Florenzi earned a goal for himself shortly after when he scored in the 14th minute, with Pjanic getting the assist. Gervinho scored his first goal of the game in the 31st minute, giving the Lupi a 3-0 lead at the half. However, Palermo would temporarily bounce back with goals from Alberto Gilardino in the 58th minute and Giancarlo Gonzalez late on in the 91st minute, though Gervinho secured the victory with his second goal of the game in the 92nd minute. Reports from LegaSerieA.it show that Roma were able to keep possession of the ball for 61% of the clash compared to Palermo’s possession rate of 39% throughout the game. The visitors were better with their passing as well as they had a 87% pass completion rate compared to the Rosanero’s pass success rate of 78%. Miralem Pjanic had the most completed passes with a total of 85, including two key passes, and had a passing accuracy of around 85%.
According to WhoScored.com, the Lupi took a total of 13 shots, putting eight of them on target, while Giuseppe Iachini’s men put five shots on goal out of a total of 14. The player with the most shots in the match was Palermo forward Franco Vazquez, who took a total of five shots with just one landing on target, while the Roma player with the most shots was Gervinho as he put three shots on target, netting two goals in the process. Pjanic had the most touches in the game with 101 throughout the 90 minutes and also won the most balls with six. Palermo were awarded more corners than their opponents with six throughout the game compared to Roma’s three. Both clubs favored the left wing when it came to launching their attacks with Roma making 38% of their attacking plays down the left side and the Rosanero making 50% of their offensive maneuvers down their own left flank. WhoScored.com names Gervinho as man of the match with a rating of 9.1 based on his impressive brace and continuous movement in the Giallorossi attack.
Roma will face Empoli next in the Serie A on October 17 at the Stadio Olimpico following the international break.
