Fiorentina vs AS Roma: Match Preview

LiveMediaSrl /

AS Roma travel to Florence to take on Fiorentina under the lights in the Monday evening game. After Lazio’s win over Sampdoria on Saturday evening, this is a must-win game for Jose Mourinho’s side in the race for a top-five finish in Serie A.

On Thursday, Roma made it through to the final of the Europa Conference League where they will take on Dutch side Feyenoord in Albania in just under three weeks’ time. Roma beat Leicester City 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Tammy Abraham. It could have been a different story if Leicester City were awarded a penalty after a foul by Chris Smalling on Wesley Fofana. That went unpunished and just five minutes later Roma went ahead.

It was a resolute second-half performance, back against the wall. Players cramping up and fighting for the cause. Leicester City on the attack after a tactical change from Brendan Rodgers as he changed the shape to a 3-5-2. It took seventy-eight minutes for the foxes to have a shot on target. There were some nervy moments in the end, but Roma held out and booked a first European final for the club since 1991.

Fiorentina are looking in from the outside for a top-five finish in Serie A, Vincenzo Italiano‘s side are in seventh in the Serie A Standings. Fiorentina have fifty-six points from thirty-five points, the same points as Atalanta who occupy eighth but kick off on Sunday lunchtime away at Spezia. Fiorentina are three points behind Roma who are in sixth and a further three points behind Lazio who have played a game more after winning 2-0 against Sampdoria on Saturday evening.

Fiorentina’s run of form in the last six games has been inconsistent, three wins and three defeats. But the run of form has come in sequences of three wins and three defeats. The three wins were after the March international break and Fiorentina were winning big games and really putting pressure on the teams above them in the league standings. Empoli were defeated at home 1-0 in the Tuscan derby. A week later Fiorentina went to Naples and crashed the party and won a five-goal thriller 3-2. On Easter Saturday, Fiorentina defeated Venezia 1-0. But it came at a cost as Gaetano Castrovilli picked up a serious knee injury and could be out for eight to ten months.

In recent weeks, Fiorentina’s form has hit the skids with three defeats in a row. A 2-1 away defeat to Salerntitana kicked off the bad run. A re-arranged midweek fixture at the end of April against Udinese saw the side from Udine go to Florence and win 4-0. Last weekend Fiorentina travelled to Milan to take on AC Milan who are in a battle for the Scudetto. AC Milan won the game late on thanks to a goal from Rafael Leao.
