Napoli vs AS Roma: Match Preview

bestino /

An absolute cracker of a game kicks off the third day of Serie A football on Easter Monday, with the Derby Della Sole. Roma travel to Naples full of confidence and face a familiar face in the opposition dugout.

With AS Roma fine domestic form pushing potentially for a top-four spot, it could still happen, but it is unlikely. Attention was turned elsewhere on Thursday with the second leg of the Europa Conference League quarter-final against a foe of this season in Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. The atmosphere was electric and Roma got the job done in a convincing matter.

Nicolo Zaniolo, the much-maligned attacker, was the hero with a wonderful hat-trick and we were all reminded of what he can do on the pitch after his horrific two ACL injuries. Tammy Abraham got the ball rolling with a close ranger finish, not a bad goal after being chucked with a snowball from the home end just seven days previously. Then it was the Nicolo Zaniolo show the attacker showed composure speed and acceleration and it was a joy to watch. This was the Zaniolo of old and pre-ACL injuries. Roma will now play Leicester City in the semi-finals who went through with two late goals in Eindhoven against PSV.

Napoli are locked in an intense Scudetto battle with both Milan clubs, this Scudetto race will go down to the final kick of matchday 38 in May. Napoli are in third going into the Easter round of fixtures. Sixty-six points from thirty-two games played, both Milan clubs have already played this weekend. Inter won away at Spezia on Friday night 3-1, AC Milan defeated Genoa 2-0 also on Friday night. So, AC Milan are top with seventy-one points from thirty-three games, Inter are second playing a game less with sixty-nine points. Napoli are third with sixty-six points. So many twists and turns will happen in the final few weeks of the season.

Napoli form in the last six games in Serie A has been very good, four wins and two defeats. Twelve points from a possible eighteen picked up. The four wins were against Lazio, Hellas Verona, Udinese, and Atalanta. The two defeats were both home defeats at home to AC Milan and last Sunday in an enthralling home game against Fiorentina. For the neutral it was a brilliant game, Fiorentina like in 2018 spoiled the party against Napoli this time in a five-goal thriller.
