When a Midfielder Can Change the Overall Perception about Roma

The Giallorossi have been doing well under Mourinho’s management, but a new midfielder seems to be necessary to drastically reduce the gap with the best Italian sides.

The sporting director of the Lupi is working to finalize a few sales and bring another important player onto the Roma roster. Tiago Pinto knows that José Mourinho would be happy to welcome a midfielder, a player capable of making a difference in such a crucial zone of the pitch.

Cristante and Veretout are great choices, but it looks like the Portuguese coach is waiting for a solid player right in front of the backline. Is Zakaria what Mourinho needs for Roma?

Villar, Diawara, and Darboe seem not to be top picks for Mourinho, and rumors are insistently reporting that if Roma will trade out a few of those players not included in the project, Pinto may finalize another great acquisition.

In the first Serie A match of the season, the Giallorossi waited for Fiorentina’s attacks to then quickly counterattack and cut Italiano’s defense like a knife in the butter. But in my view, both Cristante and Veretout moved too close to the backline giving too much space to the Viola. Only when Fiorentina scored the equalizer, the Lupi promptly reacted moving forward and scoring the second and third goals.

Back on the transfer market, I have to say that it’s difficult to understand what Mourinho is looking for to complete his midfield line, although today we may have had a clear sign.

Fiorentina finalized the acquisition of Torreira from Arsenal, a player that was linked to Roma as well. Torreira is a pure playmaker Pizarro-style, a midfielder with great vision and tempo. He joined the Viola on loan, a deal for a top player that could have been very appealing to the Lupi too.

Perhaps Mourinho wants something different though. We can now think that the Portuguese coach may not be looking for a pure playmaker but for a very physical player in front of the backline instead. This can be understandable, especially if we think of the unbelievable number of goals suffered by the Giallorossi in the past campaign.

The feeling is that Roma may have the possibility to surprise their fans in the last few days of the current transfer window, the trading period will be over on August 31st. A top midfielder can change the overall perception about Roma, a solid team that Mourinho wants to bring back to the top of Serie A.
