Roma Take Risks to Defeat Lazio. What Does This Win Means for the Future?

Marco Iacobucci Epp /

Roma win the Derby della Capitale with a solid performance and a tactical change that made the difference. Fonseca played his 4-2-3-1 again and the group was very responsive.

The Giallorossi have the technical ability to play good football although the team needs to be strengthened in some fundamental roles. This wraps up what happened at the Stadio Olimpico in the Derby della Capitale. But taking into consideration the performance of the Lupi this season, there’s much more to talk about.

Paulo Fonseca is not the only one responsible for a disappointing season. Honestly, what the team did in the Europa League was remarkable albeit the burning defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford stained an overall positive international campaign. Roma’s performance in the second part of the Italian league has been questionable, to say the least. Too many hitches and falls and little strength to get up.

What does Roma’s win in the Derby della Capitale mean for the future?

Roma’s win in the Derby della Capitale may have given a bit of relief to the fans albeit they are waiting for the next moves of the management of the club. The decision to hire Josè Mourinho as a head coach brought excitement to the Eternal City and curiosity in the world of football. But if Roma want to return to the football elite, this choice should be followed by other ambitious moves in the next transfer market window.

The legendary Portuguese coach can push their players beyond their limits but the 27 points gap between Inter and Roma at this time of the season cannot be reduced only by talking to players. Mourinho has always been a coach eager to win and compete for the most prestigious goals. That is why the supporters of the Giallorossi are now dreaming of a few top players capable of changing the objectives of the team.

The midfield needs a solid TLC. The team also needs a new top striker and possibly a goalkeeper capable of making the difference. Mourinho will surely shape a solid side defensively speaking and for that reason, the current group of defenders in charge at Roma may be confirmed with a few exceptions. Those players that have not been active in the project so far may be traded out.

The return of Nicolò Zaniolo may change the overall offensive power of the Giallorossi. The Italian star has been out for the whole season but he has the necessary time to train and shine again to play a great next campaign.

The Europa League performance and the win in the Derby della Capitale have given us the possibility to see a competitive Roma. When the team can remain focused on its goals and when the desire of the players to show their technical value pervades their minds, the Giallorossi can be a solid and effective side.

Everyone is now waiting for Dan and Ryan Friedkin because their choices can change the cards on the table. As Edin Dzeko said right at the end of Roma-Lazio, the owners of the club of Trigoria chose the best coach and that brought enthusiasm to the Roma environment. With a solid transfer campaign, the ‘Special One’ can make this team ‘Special’ again.
