Verona manages possession but Roma takes the chances (Stats)

Fonseca modified his tactical approach against Juric’s team. Hellas Verona managed the pace of the game but Roma had several chances at the Stadio Olimpico.

A good coach must be able to analyze the opponent and understand their strength. In the post-match interviews, the Portuguese coach clearly unveiled he wanted his team to wait for Hellas Verona‘s attacks in order to surprise them on the counter.

We are a team that wants to manage the ball but we also have to take into consideration the characteristics of the opponent. I have watched almost all Hellas Verona’s matches and most of the big teams experienced difficulties in keeping the ball. We didn’t want to take risks and we played on the second ball and on Dzeko. We knew that we would have space behind their defenders.

Paulo Fonseca said to Roma TV after Roma v Hellas Verona 2-1

The choices of the Portuguese coach have been successful. Although Juric‘s side managed the possession of the ball, Roma had the best chances to score and collected the three points.

  • Ball possession: 34% – 66%;
  • Total shots: 20 – 7;
  • Shots on target: 6 – 1;
  • Shots off target: 8 – 1;
  • Blocked shots: 6 – 5;
  • Big chances: 4 – 1.
