Roger Ibanez joined Roma yesterday and he also spoke to Roma TV about his characteristics. He may be a perfect defender for Fonseca’s football.
Roma’s executives really believe in the quality of Roger Ibanez and he seems to be very happy to begin this new exciting professional experience in the Italian capital.
Ibanez joins a group that already has four skilled centre-backs. Smalling and Mancini are Fonseca’s starters, but Fazio and Cetin represent two reliable options.
Ibanez doesn’t seem to be scared of the competition, though. The Brazilan defender knows his quality and he wants to show what he can do on the pitch as soon as possible.
“I’m fast and I have good technique. But I can show my ability only on the pitch. Before playing as a centre-back I had also played as a midfielder and I can still play that role as well,” Roger Ibanez said to Roma TV.
If the expectations of the club were confirmed, Paulo Fonseca may have found a fast defender to play a 3-man defense. In the recent Derby della Capitale, the Portuguese coach told Santon to play defensively in order to support Smalling and Mancini giving the possibility to Spinazzola and Under to think about the offensive phase. In the future, Ibanez could be a key piece of Fonseca’s puzzle.
Roma‘s coach also wants his defense to stay high-up to reduce the space with the midfield line. But to play offensive football you must also have fast defenders capable of chasing opponents.
Although he will need a period of adaptation and learning, Ibanez may surprise the Roma fans.
