Smalling-Fazio: Two Giants Defend the Team of the Eternal City (Stats)

The Giallorossi are a very solid side and although Fazio missed yesterday’s clash against Napoli, the Argentine and Smalling provide enough protection to Roma.

Paulo Fonseca may have found the right balance on the pitch. Chris Smalling and Federico Fazio are the perfect pair for Roma’s defense. Their efficiency has improved since the Portuguese coach moved Gianluca Mancini in midfield. The Italian defender is a very reliable defensive playmaker who properly shields the backline.

Martin Cetin played a good match yesterday. The Turk saved Roma by getting a deserved red card to avoid Napoli‘s probable equalizer. But Smalling and Fazio may be the right centre-backs till the end of the season.

Smalling and Fazio made 7 caps since the beginning of the current Serie A season. 660 minutes played for the former Manchester United man and 557 for the Argentine. Both players have a great successful pass percentage, 90.7% vs 85%. The 29-year-old from London has been simply invincible in aerial duels (average per game 4.9 | Fazio 2.6).

According to the stats provided by WhoScored.com, the rating of the two Roma defenders is 7.35 for the Englishman and 6.66 for the Argentine.

Smalling and Fazio are two defensive giants in charge of protecting the gates of the prestigious team of the eternal city.
