The Portuguese held a press conference ahead of the Serie A home match against Sassuolo. Smalling will not debut on Sunday.
After the international break, Fonseca had the opportunity to train his men and get ready for the next important match. Sassuolo is going to be a tough opponent but the Giallorossi need three points to get closer to the top of the standings.
Unfortunately, Chris Smalling will not debut on Sunday. The English player is not totally fit and Fonseca decided to leave him out. “We passed ten days without those players involved with their national team. But we had time to work and many of those players have not played so they will be available,” said Fonseca to the press at Trigoria.
“Smalling had a little problem and we don’t want to take risks. We want him at 100% because we have a streak of important matches ahead of us.”
The Portuguese coach was also asked about the many injuries that his players are experiencing since the beginning of the season. “Under got injured with his national team. Pastore didn’t have a muscular problem, but he has a recent history of injuries and we have a duty to manage players at risk. Smalling felt pain in the adductor and we didn’t want to take risks, it wasn’t a muscle injury either. Spinazzola has had a problem that can happen. The two cases to be studied are those of Zappacosta and Perotti,” continued Fonseca. “We need to investigate these two situations further, then there may also be psychological reasons.”
