Roma’s coach Fonseca spoke to the press ahead of the upcoming Derby della Capitale and explained why the club signed the English defender Smalling.
We are finally close to the first Derby della Capitale of the 2019-20 campaign. Although the city rivals seem to be favorite tomorrow, Fonseca believes they have to demonstrate their skills on the pitch.
The Giallorossi were looking for a new defender for a long time and Chris Smalling‘s arrival may change the solidity of Fonseca’s backline. The English defender comes from Manchester United, the club who gave him notoriety and a great experience.
“We were looking for an experienced player and he made more than 200 appearances at Manchester United. He has the right skills that fit our team well. He is fast and aggressive. He can add quality to our roster,” said Fonseca during today’s press conference at Trigoria.
The Portuguese coach knows how important the Derby is for the fans: “it is an important match for the fans. You can feel it when going around the city and the fans want you to know that clearly. Although it is worth three points, it has higher emotional engagement. I hope it will be the first of many more derbies and I can’t wait to play it.”
