Roma: Alderweireld Could Stay at Tottenham Next Season

The 30-year-old defender seems to be ready to stay at his current club albeit Roma may be chasing the player until the end of the summer transfer window.

It is no mystery that Roma is seriously interested in signing the Belgian star. But the future of Toby Alderweireld could still be at Tottenham next season. When just a few days ago he was asked if he expects to be at Spurs for the start of the new season, the player clearly stated: “Yes, that’s my focus.”

Although in football anything can happen, there are not many possibilities to see him arrive in the Italian capital at this time. “I’m happy…In my head I will be playing for Spurs,” had said Alderweireld.

Roma is, therefore, screening the market to find other valid defenders. As Morgan De Sanctis said yesterday during Mancini’s press conference, the Giallorossi need another centre-back this summer.

De Sanctis: Our Choices Made on Technical and Economic Parameters

The Premier League will start on August 9th and Alderweireld seems to be ready to begin a new exciting campaign with the British side. His expensive? release clause, about €28 million, is set to expire on Friday. Reportedly, after that date, the price-tag of the player may not fall but rise dramatically. This is the power of a club, the English one, which is financially in perfect health.

Several football pundits firmly believe Alderweireld would be one of the best deals of the summer. In a football where prices have risen incredibly, the price-tag of the Belgian star may not even be considered too high. His contract is set to expire on June 30, 2020, and the strong defender may play another season in the United Kingdom before signing a new great deal with another top-level club.

Roma cannot wait for him, though. The Giallorssi are reshaping their defense. Spinazzola, Lopez and Mancini have already started their new professional experiences in the eternal city. But Paulo Fonseca needs another great piece for his backline. If Alderweireld will not be an option anymore, Roma may have lost a great opportunity to complete a cut-price deal for Tottenham defender.
