Paulo Fonseca is well known for his ambitious way to attack and dominate the game. But the memory of the bad defensive performances of the past season could frighten Roma fans.
Paulo Fonseca is officially the new head coach of the Giallorossi. The Portuguese signed a two-year contract with an option for the third. Finally, the Lupi have their leader, a wise and ambitious coach who wants to improve and play very offensive football. His tactical guidelines may not marry with the qualities of his current group though.
Today, Jim Pallotta welcomed the new coach in the Roma world highlighting his offensive predisposition. “Paulo is a young and ambitious coach with international experience, a winning mentality and a reputation for bold attacking football that will excite our fans,” stated the American investor as reported by the official AS Roma website.
Everything seems to be very beautiful and promising, but the reality is that the Giallorossi suffered terribly in the defensive phase throughout last season. Di Francesco‘s offensive approach could recall that of the Portuguese coach. Roma ended the 2018-19 Serie A with 48 goals suffered. Data that lead us to think that the defensive line must be not only strengthened but totally changed.
Will Fazio be able to maintain an extremely offensive position to shrink the lines? Will Florenzi, Karsdorp, Luca Pellegrini, and Kolarov be able to cover a large portion of the field to offend and defend as the coach requires? Will Fonseca convince Manolas to stay in the eternal city forever? What about Marcano and Juan Jesus?…Could they represent good value for Fonseca?
Honest questions that make us understand the hard work that will have to be done in the coming months to provide the coach with a suitable group able to play his football. “Together, I believe we can create something special,” said Paulo Fonseca today. Now, however, no one can know if his football will excite or scare Roma fans.
