Dzeko, His Italian Decline and European Rise (Stats)

Edin Dzeko | AS Roma

Despite his importance in Di Francesco’s group, Edin Dzeko’s spell at Roma seems to have entered a descending parable. His performances do not reflect the absolute value of a player who must always make a difference.

In the current Serie A season, the performance of the Bosnian star has inexorably collapsed to historical lows. Roma need his goals but so far the striker entered a dark tunnel apparently without exit. Since the beginning of the season, he played 15 matches (11 as a starter) averaging 70‘ minutes per game. But his efficiency in front of the net has unexpectedly dropped. Although he was out injured for a few weeks, in the 2018-19 Serie A, Edin Dzeko scored just 2 goals. This is not enough for a top player on which his teammates and coach rely on.

What could be defined as an inexorable decline in Italy, it is confirmed if we take into account his performance in the past years. In the Serie A edition 2016-17, the Bosnia international had played 37 matches (33 as a starter) scoring 29 goals (one goal every 105‘ minutes).

The season after (2017-18), Dzeko had not reached the peaks of the previous year but he dragged his teammates to the qualification to the Champions League group stage.

  • Total played: 36
  • Started: 33
  • Minutes per game: 83
  • Goals: 16
  • Scoring frequency: 189‘ minutes

We are therefore witnessing a sort of his Italian decline that however is balanced with his remarkable European performance. In fact, Dzeko’s spell in the Champions League is more and more impressing. His scoring skills find their maximum expression when the spotlights of the most prestigious European competition come on.

Numbers are there to testify Dzeko’s double face, the one that is apparently sad and distracted in the Italian championship that clashes with his disruptive and driving force in the magical nights of the Champions League.

Eusebio Di Francesco and the Roma fans need Dzeko’s European vibe in the Italian Serie A as well. There is no chance to reach the qualification to the next Champions League if the Bosnian star doesn’t score consistently.
