The giallorossi definitely improved their European position since the arrival of the American investor Jim Pallotta. Roma is now ahead of Klopp’s men.

The 2018-19 European campaign is ready to begin but reading the numbers referred to the points collected by the clubs in the past five years, Roma climbed the ranking.

The Lupi are now in the 21st position of the UEFA Club Coefficients Ranking. It’s interesting to see that, albeit the club of Trigoria have sold a couple of top players to Liverpool FC in the past two transfer windows, Roma is still ahead of the British side having collected 2,000 points more in the last five years (64,000 vs 62,000).

Juventus (126,000) and Napoli (78,000) have performed better than Pallotta‘s club in the period under observation.

At the top of the ranking are the European Champions Real Madrid (162,000 points), Atletico Madrid (140,000) and Bayern Munich (135,000). Remarkable performances for Diego Simeone and his roster. In the past five years, they did better than Barcelona on the European stage.

To better understand how the club coefficients are calculated we just need to evaluate the results of clubs competing in the five previous seasons of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. The rankings determine the seeding of each club in relevant UEFA competition draws. UEFA assign a numerical value to the performance of each club on the European stage.

As highlighted on their official website, the points system has changed and from the 2018-19 European campaign onwards it’s as follows:

UEFA Champions League
Group stage participation: 4 points
Group stage win: 2 points
Group stage draw: 1 point
Round of 16 participation: 4 points

  • (An additional point will be assigned for the qualification to the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.)

UEFA Europa League
Preliminary round elimination: 0.5 points
First qualifying round elimination: 1 point
Second qualifying round elimination: 1.5 points
Third qualifying round elimination: 2 points
Play-off elimination: 2.5 points
Group stage win: 2 points
Group stage draw: 1 point

  • (A minimum of three points is guaranteed if a club reaches the group stage. An additional point is assigned if a club gets to the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.)
