Sunday night sees the final game of the Serie A season and Roma still need one point to wrap up a top three position.
Roma travel to Sassuolo who are already safe from relegation with ambitions of finishing in the top three and securing automatic qualification for next season Champions League.
Roma have finished the Serie A season strongly and finished their home campaign last weekend with a 0-0 draw with Juventus. Roma dominated the game for seventy minutes until Radja Nainggolan got himself sent off for two yellow cards, the second was for a foul on Paulo Dybala. The last twenty minutes played into Juventus hands as they only needed a point to capture their seventh straight Scudetto. They duly got it by playing keep-ball and frustrating the hosts.
Bar that home draw with the new Italian champions, Roma have gone unbeaten in their last six Serie A games. Winning four against Genoa, SPAL, Chievo, and Cagliari. Picking up two draws at home to Lazio and last weekend against Juventus. With that end of season form, Roma have managed to farm off the challenge from Lazio and Inter for the top three spot. Evidentially Lazio and Inter will face each other in the final game of the season for the 4th place and Champions League football for next season.
Sassuolo have risen to 11th in the league table after last week brilliant win at the San Siro against Inter Milan. But that did not see plausible just two months ago, as Sassuolo were knee deep in a relegation scrap. But with one defeat in their last eleven games and that was a 4-1 thrashing at Crotone who are fighting for survival.
Sassuolo have won four out of the last five which has propelled them to safety and will be a tough nut to crack for Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma to break down on Sunday evening. Sassuolo have picked up vital wins over Hellas Verona, Sampdoria, Fiorentina and last weekend in a back against the wall performance away at Inter Milan. Francesco Acerbi and his defense came away after that performance with stellar reviews and done a brilliant job blunting the Inter attack. Acerbi who has beaten cancer twice managed to keep joint top goal scorer Mauro Icardi quiet for ninety minutes.
Both Roma and Sassuolo are going into this final game of the season looking to the end the season on a high. Eusebio Di Francesco will not want to end the season on a low note and put all the hard work of recent months down the drain and lose a top three position in the league table.
