Roma on the road in Ferrara to play SPAL and to collect three vital points for the qualification for the 2018-19 Champions League. EDF’s men completed their Serie A mission.
Roma outshoots SPAL 6-1 in the first half but wasted several chances to widen the gap. A very disappointing performance by El Shaarawy that has not been able to stub Alex Meret from favorable positions a couple of times. Lorenzo Pellegrini can be blamed as well. A mid-right that must do something more to impress. The Roman midfielder wasted great opportunities right in front of SPAL’s goalkeeper. Patrik Schick has not provided that necessary deepness to help the development of the offensive strategies of the Giallorossi. But the Czech international served a delicious assist to El Shaarawy that wasted the chance to double the lead.
SPAL has not been able to create danger to the Roma backline. Paloschi has been controlled and locked in a cage built up by Manolas and Fazio. The Lupi should have been leading the match with a wide gap comfortably. But Di Francesco’s men atavistic inability to kill the match kept SPAL into the match during the first 45 minutes. Vicari’s own goal put Roma ahead in Ferrara. But EDF’s crew have been unable to exploit their plays even when they have been in the box in a dangerous numerical superiority five times.
Semplici and Di Francesco started the second half with the same 22 players who finished the first. Nainggolan’s volley into the edge of the box widens the gap for Roma at 51. The Lupi had begun the second 45 minutes with the same pace of the first pushing hard to score again. Schick’s peremptory header sealed the result 0-3 in the 60th minute. This has been the first goal of the season for the expensive Roma summer sign.
With the three points in the pocket, EDF decided to replace a few key players thinking ahead at the Champions League clash against Liverpool. Strootman has been replaced by Cengiz Under in order to rest the Dutchman, and Nainggolan left the field subbed by Perotti.
A very pragmatic game for Roma that gets closer to the qualification for the 2018-19 Champions League spot.
