Roma-Fiorentina (Serie A 2017-18) Tactical Preview

Roma faces Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico after having spent mental energies in the Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Fiorentina is going to be a tough obstacle for the Giallorossi after having faced Barcelona in Spain. Di Francesco’s men must pay attention to the Viola, a team that in the last period collected many points playing well. Pioli‘s guys will be mentally free and with a great confidence.

The last four meetings between Roma and Fiorentina are there to confirm that the game will not be easy for the home side. Although the Giallorossi have won at the Stadio Franchi scoring four goals on November 5, 2017, and 4-0 in Rome on February 7, 2017, tomorrow’s match may hold some surprises.

Di Francesco should start Juan Jesus in the backline and Gerson on the right offensive flank. The Italian coach also assured that Defrel will be part of the Roma starting 11. The former Sassuolo striker will play a role of primary importance from a tactical standpoint. He will be playing right behind Dzeko trying to find the necessary spaces turning around the Bosnian in a second striker role. With Gerson on the right side, Roma will attack a lot more on the other flank. Kolarov and El Shaarawy will try to make the difference in that sector surprising Saponara and Milenkovic.

De Rossi will be, once again, the playmaker, the player in charge to set the pace of the game. Pellegrini, instead, will do the two phases trying to help the captain and to fit between the Fiorentina lines. Dzeko will duel with Pezzella and Hugo. The Bosnian star could succeed in opening interesting spaces for Defrel.

Pioli’s 4-2-3-1 will be a bit more conservative even for the bloody absence of Chiesa, a player who could have put the Giallorossi in great trouble thanks to his technique and speed. Simeone will lead the attack supported by Saponara and Eysseric. Most likely, Benassi will attack the spaces left by Peres and Gerson. Cristoforo and the talented Veretout will act as a defensive shield triggering counterattacks when it will be possible.
