Roma defeats Napoli at Stadio San Paolo with a convincing performance. The partenopei could lose the leading position in the 2017-18 Serie A standings.

Roma defused Napoli in the first half keeping its lines very thigh and with a super Daniele De Rossi as a playmaker. The giallorossi approached the match with the right attitude having a great chance with Perotti to get the lead. His header went over the bar.

Napoli profited from its first opportunity instead. Lorenzo Insigne‘s cross-shot after an incursion from the left flank left Alisson powerless. Although the Lupi could have suffered a terrible shock, Di Francesco‘s men promptly raised their heads and scored the equalizer with Cengiz Under perfectly served by Nainggolan. A slight deflection mocked Reina, 1-1. Roma counterattacked with efficiency and organization. After a couple of bad mistakes, Edin Dzeko reacted and managed to keep the ball high pushing Roma’s wingers to attack Napoli’s defensive flanks. Florenzi’s great cross from the right offensive flank gave Dzeko the opportunity to put the giallorossi ahead. The header of the Bosnian striker stubbed Reina on his left side leaving Albiol powerless, 1-2!

Roma with no fear in the second half as well albeit Napoli pushed to find the equalizer. Di Francesco and Sarri didn’t change their starters and the pace of the game remained unaltered. Napoli’s dominance in possession pushed the Lupi on their defensive side leaving spaces for counterattacks. Napoli forced Roma’s fortress for several minutes but Alisson and a post saved the giallorossi. In order to break Roma’s wall, Sarri decided to play Hamsik in the 64th minute and a curled shot by Insigne went slightly wide just one minute later. Roma went out of the storm in the 73rd minute when Dzeko curled a perfect shot to score the 1-3!

A demoralized home side didn’t have the mental strength to react and the Lupi bite the prey with no mercy. Perotti scored the 1-4 shooting from the penalty zone after a bad defensive effort by Mario Rui. Mertens‘ goal right at the end of the match didn’t change the outcome of this Serie A clash, 2-4.

Roma collected three unexpected points on the road. Napoli licks its wounds instead.
