Verona-Roma 0-1, Free and Happy Like a Butterfly

The ghosts of the transfer market session faded. Roma is back on track, mentally free and eager to do well.

After months of stagnant apathy and confusion, Di Francesco‘s new tactical scheme changed the card on the table giving certainties back to his squad. The 4-2-3-1 seemed to be the right tactical approach for the Lupi. Dzeko was properly supported in the offensive phase and the trio behind him (Nainggolan, El Shaarawy, and Cengiz Under) kept the midfield very high putting pressure on the opposing defensive line. Pellegrini and Strootman safeguarded the centre-backs providing a necessary stability to the line.

Roma‘s first-half was definitely positive in terms of game development, rhythms, and creativity. We cannot say the same thing if we take into account prolificity. Although Cengiz Under broke the deadlock in the first minute of the match with a great intrusion and a precise shot on the left corner, Dzeko and El Shaarawy missed several chances to double the lead. The approach of the Bosnian star was remarkable though. He was able to fight all over the offensive side with tenacity and competitive nastiness.
Roma has regained a group spirit and brilliance. A mental freshness seen during the first three months of the 2017 season. Rapid plays in midfield made the difference putting Verona in trouble several times.

The first 45 minutes ended 0-1 albeit the giallorossi would have deserved more.

Pellegrini‘s moment of madness put Pecchia’s team back into the match. His red card in the 51st minute gave confidence to the home side putting pressure on the Lupi. The second-half is a collection of ups and downs, a rollercoaster of emotions no good for those with problems of high pressure.

Although Verona played with a man more, the gialloblu didn’t create many dangerous opportunities to score the equalizer. Roma, instead, went close to the goal on a few other occasions unbelievably missing chances in front of the opponent keeper who hypnotized Dzeko and Strootman.

Roma collected deserved three points to chase Inter and a Champions League spot.
