Roma needs a victory in the next Serie A match against Sampdoria to appease the club’s demobilization voices.
Although a victory tomorrow in the home match against Sampdoria could benefit the giallorossi, Di Francesco‘s press conference unveiled the bitter truth in the Italian capital. Pallotta‘s club must cope with the financial fair play regulations and the January trading of players is a natural consequence. This is not a news, everyone interested in football knows that the Lupi are trying to seal a double deal with Chelsea but today Di Francesco said something more important than that.
The Italian coach was unaware of the strategies of the club and he pointed out that the management clearly told him “if you don’t accept this you have to go.”
Di Francesco’s words are shocking, especially when he further explained his objectives. “I chose to train Roma, even in times of difficulties, and right now we are experiencing a difficult moment. I don’t have to provide you with right explanations, somebody else is in charge of this. – said a determined Di Francesco.“
“No one at Roma wants to get rid of the best players. If somebody leaves there are two different paths to follow. The money will be reinvested or banked. But the main topic is that I am facing an unexpected situation.”
The Roma coach also spoke about Dzeko‘s possible departure. “Our Sporting Director previously spoke about these topics and he will talk with all of you again if something else will be formalized. Currently, Dzeko is available and I will play him until he will be part of my group. I hope he can stay with us until the end of the season. This is my job and I try to give my best. I cannot say anything else right now.”
Today’s press conference highlighted that Di Francesco cannot rule on financial decisions. This is something understandable but it also shows that probably Eusebio doesn’t have the necessary charisma to lead a team that should have great ambitions. I am firmly convinced that coaches like Capello or Ancelotti would have packed their bags greeting everyone before resigning. However, we should also ask ourselves if the top managers of this glorious club really believe in what they say.
Is Roma following a virtuous path that can lead to success?
We’ll see, but the reality is that by selling players like Emerson and Dzeko in January a failure seems to be more likely than a victory. Roma’s current position in the standings is alarming. Although the Champions League spots are not far away, Napoli and Juventus are unreachable. If we think that the giallorossi ended the 2017-18 season in the second position but now they see Sarri’s boys 13 points ahead we can clearly say that some wrong choice was made.
