Roma left Marassi stadium collecting just one point against Genoa. The giallorossi are a solid team but without a great creativity in midfield.
There are several positive things that we can mention about Di Francesco‘s team. Roma seems to be a very solid side able to manage the possession of the ball wherever they play. Great performances like the one at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea or the home against Lazio are there to confirm the quality and temperament of the Lupi. Although the giallorossi are a giant of the Italian football and a team with several top players, Di Francesco’s squad seems to be too solid in midfield but without creativity. The Italian coach chose Nainggolan, Strootman, and De Rossi as its top trio but these three players are great tacklers but poor chance builders.
Radja Nainggolan stands out as a top finisher and intruder when the development of the offensive strategy requires doing so but both the Belgian and the Dutchman [Strootman] are not top players in passing the ball through. Daniele De Rossi is the playmaker of the team and by playing just in front of the defensive line he is never in the condition to make the final assist.
Roma needs a bit more creativity in midfield. Although Perotti and El Shaarawy are stepping back in midfield quite often to help their teammates and to create dangerous opportunities, sometimes Di Francesco’s team seems to be in the need of a great trequartista. The Lupi primarily develop their game on the flanks. Kolarov and Perotti are often creating chances from the left side while El Shaarawy operates on the right. Their plays do not foresee a ball through for the striker but crosses or shots on target. Roma has a very solid midfield line but in matches where the opponents are only defending and counterattacking there is the need for creativity to break the deadlock.
