Di Francesco’s secret: tight lines and short passes

Di Francesco - AS Roma

Roma defeats Lazio 2-1 at the Olimpico stadium. A master performance for the Lupi. Di Francesco outperforms Inzaghi implementing an efficient tactical approach.

When Roma’s management gave him the leading position on the roster several football pundits were very skeptical about Di Francesco’s ability to adapt his tactical style in such a big club. Three months after, the Italian coach convinced everyone. Eusebio is not only a good trainer but a coach able to create a solid group.

Di Francesco’s secret is simple. The Lupi keep the lines very tight minimizing the possibility to suffer goals or dangerous occasions. The players perfectly move on the field. Their harmonious short passes make the difference as well. Fazio and Manolas keep Roma’s defensive line very high, reducing the gap with the midfield. Therefore, Strootman, De Rossi, and Nainggolan have the possibility to properly help the defensive and offensive phases. Their mobility produces danger for the opponents that are unable to predict where and how they will move. Dzeko is a colossus able to intercept and bring down balls. Thanks to his technical skills the Bosnian star widens the action on the two flanks. Perotti and El Shaarawy are lethal and always supported by a super Kolarov and Florenzi, two phenomenal runners. Most of the time, Perotti easily dribbles his opponents creating a dangerous numerical superiority. El Shaarawy does the same operating as a right-winger.

Di Francesco built up a perfect mechanism that creates discomfort for the opponents defenses. The accurate turnover that he is implementing makes the difference as well. Roma’s roster is deep and qualitative. Juan Jesus, Peres, Gerson, Gonalons, and Pellegrini are perfectly able to replace their teammates without diminishing the quality on the field. When Patrik Schick will be fully fit, even Dzeko will have time to rest.

Di Francesco’s secret is also to keep all the players within the project assuring them that sooner or later there’ll be space for everyone.
