The Champions League match that Roma played agaisnt Atletico Madrid confirmed a negative trend for the giallorossi. The team lacks fitness but even an appropriate tactical scheme.
According to my view of football, the giallorossi are not as consistent and solid as they were in the previous year. Although Di Francesco is a new and young coach who needs to have the necessary time to shape his team, the italian trainer should find a more appropriate tactical scheme based on the qualities of the players on his roster.
Arguably, Roma has the strongest midfielders in the Italian Serie A, but Di Francesco’s 4-3-3 is not featuring the qualities of his stars so far. Strootman, De Rossi and Nainggolan are not use to playing in this way. Especially, the Dutch midfielder doesn’t seem to be right running for a very large portion of the field. De Rossi is acting as a pure playmaker but due to his age he cannot perform the offensive and defensive phase efficiently. Last seson, Radja Nainggolan was playing closer to Edin Dzeko. That tactical invention implemented by Spalletti allowed the Belgian star to score several goal and give vent to his physical super power. In Di Francesco’s 4-3-3 Radja is far away from the box and his ray of action is more decentralized.
Even Edin Dzeko is suffering with this tactical approach. Right after the Champions League match, the Bosnian highlighted that he is too isolated up there. This is the reason why he cannot be dangerous.
Eusebio Di Francesco must solve this tactical imbalance as soon as possible.
