The Turkish talent began his new adventure in Rome after Monchi’s prepotent relaunch to close a deal that was at serious risk due to the attention that the youngster had brought upon himself.
Tottenham and Manchester City were chasing Ünder with Guardiola’s club that made an offer to Basaksehir for his final acquisition. However, sometimes the appeal of a club is not everything in players’ and agents’ minds.
As revealed by the agent of the player, Omer Uzun, Manchester City made a bid but the intention of the British club was to send Ünder on loan somewhere else. In light of that and having received Roma’s offer as well, the player and his staff decided to accept the court of the Giallorossi.
“Roma is one of the best teams in Italy – stated Omer Uzun – We are sure that their project is the best for Cengiz Ünder”
Yesterday, Cengiz Ünder landed in Rome. Shortly he will take his medical to begin a new adventure in a new country and in a tougher league. The youngster is aware that difficulties are around the corner but he is ready to face them. Demonstrating a great personality he also clarified that he will fight for a starter position.
“I know that I will have to compete with El Shaarawy and Perotti to play. I am ready to do so.”
What a personality from a 20-year old!
The question at this point is, can Cengiz Ünder make a difference at AS Roma?
The young Turkish star seems to have the skills and qualities to impress Eusebio Di Francesco and those who never saw him play. His versatility and ability to play on the left and right flanks are definitely great qualities.
In the 2016-17 season, he made a consistent amount of appearances (43) between the Turkish Super Lig, the Türkiye Kupasi, and the Europa League Qualifiers. The young talent was able to score 9 goals and provide 7 assists to his teammates.
His great season was noted by an expert and wise football manager, Fatih Terim, who decided to call him up for the Turkish national team. Even in that competitive environment, Cengiz Ünder shocked everyone making great performances and becoming well-known and appreciated player not only within his homeland but abroad as well. Cengiz Ünder played four matches with his national team and scored two goals.
On the basis of his talent, experience, and mental strength Ünder seems to be ready to jump into Italian football. Although the language barrier is going to be a problem especially in the first 6-12 months, the player is going to Rome with a positive and proactive mindset that is putting him in an advantageous situation.
“The first thing I am going to do when I get to Rome is to learn the language as quickly as possible. – stated Ünder.”
The youngster is ready to impress the AS Roma fans and with this attitude, I am confident that he can make a difference for the Giallorossi. However, only time will tell.
