Sarri’s crew played a fury and tactically perfect first half. Once more after the defeat suffered in the derby, Roma seemed to be tired, confused, and unable to develop efficient plays.
When Radja Nainggolan is well covered, the giallorossi are less aggressive and lose their nuclear power. In the first 45 minutes, the Belgian star was under Jorginho’s protection and the Brazilian playmaker, assisted by Rog wisely reduced Nainggolan’s ray of actions. The goal that Napoli scored is the natural conclusion of a dominance on the left side of the pitch where Insigne and Hamsik exploited Manolas’s bad performance tucking the defense like a knife through butter. Dris Martens alone in front of the goalkeeper performed a quality lob giving to Sarri’s guys the lead. Roma didn’t have many great chances to score. Spalletti’s guys were not able to develop smooth and dangerous plays. Banti canceled Perotti’s goal after the Roma winger touched the ball with his hand. Napoli deserved the lead in the first half.
The second half started on the wrong foot for the giallorossi. Fazio’s passage was intercepted by Callejon who began the counterattack. Insigne, left completely alone on the left side attacked the defense line and served a juicy assist on the far end post where Martens comfortably doubled the lead. Roma vehemently reacted after Spalletti replaced El Shaarawy and Fazio with Salah and Peres. Thanks to the speed and endurance of the Egyptian winger Roma triggered a couple of good opportunities but Reina denied the goal. Even Dzeko had a good chance face to face with the Spanish keeper but his shot went wide. Napoli resisted but Roma had the necessary strength to return in the match thanks to Strootman’s crossfire that ended up in the net. The last 5 minutes of the match were simply crazy. Multiple times Roma went close to the equalizer. Perotti’s shot went slightly wide on the far end post, a header of Dzeko end up in the same way, but Reina’s save after a shot of Perotti diverted by Koulibaly was simply marvelous and decisive.
Napoli reopened the race for the second place in the standings and for the direct qualification to the 2017-18 Champions League.
