A late Alexandre Lacazette goal has given Lyon advantage going into the second leg as Lyon came up on top 4-2 in the last 16 first leg.
Mouctar Diakhaby gave Lyon the lead then Roma hit back with goals from Mohamed Salah and Federico Fazio. Three second half goals from Lyon as first Corentin Tolisso equalised, Nabil Fekir danced around the Roma defence to give Lyon the slight advantage. Then in stoppage time, Lyon added a 4th thanks to an Alexandre Lacazette thumping strike.
Radja Nainggolan had the first sight on goal in the game in the opening 4 minutes, Nainggolan hit a snap shot which was parried away by Portuguese goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. Rebound fell to Emerson who cross for Mohamed Salah who handled and English Referee Anthony Taylor pulled back the play for the Free kick.
Roma were having joy down the Lyon right hand side, a cross in from Roma left found Mohamed Salah who had a sight on goal and his effort was fired over first time. Lyon took the lead after 8 minutes with their first chance on goal. Cheap free kick given away by Federico Fazio, Mathieu Valbuena played in a lovely free kick which was flicked on by Rafael and Mouctar Diakhaby was at the back post to volley from inside of the area.
The confidence was flowing through this Lyon side in the opening stages of the game and fired another warning shot to Roma, Valbuena had a goal bound effort blocked by Juan Jesus after brilliant build up play by Alexandre Lacazette. After the early Lyon pressure, Roma got a footing into the game and attacked well down the Lyon left. Bruno Peres and Mohamed Salah combined well with the latter floating a cross in for Edin Dzeko who could only loop his header over the crossbar.
Roma equalised after twenty minutes and were gifted the more important away goal. Federico Fazio with a defensive clearance fell to Lyon goal scorer Diakhaby stumbled and fell to the floor, Salah capitalised on the mistake and slotted the ball through the onrushing Lopes legs to equalise. Roma took the lead after thirty three minutes and turned this game around, Daniele De Rossi corner was cleared away by the Lyon defence, ball fell to Nainggolan who made a slide pass to De Rossi. De Rossi took one touch and curled an inch perfect cross into the path of Federico Fazio who made no mistake with a towering header.
Maxime Gonalons had a tame effort comfortably saved by Alisson as Lyon were trying to find their way back into the game before the half time break. Valbuena who pulled rank with Ghezzal over a free kick had a set piece comfortably saved by Alisson.
Lyon grabbed an equaliser two minutes into the second half, it was brilliant build up play between Tolisso and Lacazette and the Corentin Tolisso hit a brilliant low effort into the bottom corner. Great two touch up play from Lacazette and Tolisso for the goal. Roma then hit Lyon the counter attack as the game started to liven up. Radja Nainggolan broke from deep and had options left and right, took the option to the right for Salah who teed up Kevin Strootman and his right footed effort was well parried away to safety by Lopes.
Maxime Gonalons had a long range effort from outside of the box deflected goalwards by Daniele De Rossi which had Alisson scrambling and managed to claw it away. Two brilliant saves from Alisson kept lyon at bay, Lacazette had a blistering long range effort turned away for a corner. Valbuena had a curling deflected effort which was tipped over the bar from the Brazilian goalkeeper. Alisson keeping Roma in the first leg at this point.
Substitute Nabil Fekir with a moment of magic gave Lyon a third goal late in the second half, excellent play from Fekir as he danced around the Roma back three and curled in a lovely low effort into the far corner. Lyon then added the gloss on to the scoreline in added time with an absolute rocket of a goal from Alexandre Lacazette. The French striker took one touch and fired a stonking effort into the top corner.
All in all a fair result for Lyon on the second half alone and showed their quality with the last three goals scored. Its back to the drawing board for Luciano Spalletti Roma side as that is their third defeat in a row in three different competitions and the tiredness is starting to show.
