Roma go into Wednesday Quarter Final Coppa Italia looking for retribution after Sunday Serie A league defeat away at Sampdoria, after a Roma penalty claims were turned away in stoppage time after an offside flag was raised.
Wednesday game against Serie B side Cesena is the perfect game to get back in the winning way and advance to the latter stages of the Coppa Italia where they could play either Inter or Lazio.
Sunday game away at Sampdoria was Roma first defeat of 2017 and it was really a wake up goal for the Roman side. Roma took an early lead and then decided to sit back and shut up shop and invited Sampdoria on the attack which they obliged on. With that defeat Roma fall further behind Juventus for top spot and the dream of a 4th Scudetto is now slipping away.
Cesena who are struggling in Serie B at the moment in 20th place with 24 points from 23 games will be looking to take another scalp in the Coppa Italia. In the previous round, Cesena travelled to take on Sassuolo in the last 16 and shocked Sassuolo and Serie A by picking up a late 2-1 away win to book a trip to the capital to take on Roma. With this they will be travelling to Rome with the giant killing mentality and will be looking to cause a massive shock in the Coppa Italia.
Cesena league form this year hasn’t been that good since returning from the Serie B winter break after playing on Boxing day and on the 30th of December. Cesena have picked up two points from two games, a 3-3 draw away at Perugia was followed with a 2-2 home draw at home to Ascoli.
Tomorrow game will be the 7th time that Roma and Cesena will play each other in Serie A or in the Coppa Italia. First played each other in the opening game of the 2010/11 season where Cesena picked up a 0-0 draw away at Roma. Roma since that have won the 5 games in a row, scoring 12 at a rate of 2 per game and conceding 3 at a rate of 0.5 per game.
The last time these two sides met was in the 2014-15 season and it was late on in the season on the 22/3/15 where Roma travelled to the Stadio Dino Manuzzi and came away with a 1-0 away win thanks to a goal from Daniele De Rossi.
