Roma 3-2 Pescara: Lacklustre home performance but the win matters

Roma picked up the 3 points on Sunday evening against second bottom side Pescara 3-2.

Roma went 2-0 up thanks to 2 goals from Edin Dzeko, Ledian Memushaj pulled one back. Diego Perotti then added a third from the penalty spot. Gianluca Capari pulled a second goal back to make the game more interesting but Roma held on for the win.

Mohamed Salah had Roma first chance of the game after 5 minutes, Edin Dzeko played a defence splitting ball which fell to the Salah who could only poke his effort wide of the upright. Roma opened the scoring after 6 minutes, a short worked corner was crossed in by Diego Perotti found Edin Dzeko at the back post and he volleyed home from close range. Roma doubled the lead after 10 minutes, a cross in from the left hand side from Diego Perotti found Edin Dzeko who broke the Pescara offside trap and volleyed into the bottom corner. Simone Pepe had Pescara opening chance of the game, a cross in from the left hand side found the former Juventus attacker but his volley was comfortably saved by Szczesny.

Some excellent passing football which involved Salah/Gerson/Strootman found Radja Nainggolan who fired his effort straight at the veteran Pescara goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri. Roma were given a wakeup call when good Pescara play down the Roma left hand side led to an effort from Ahmed Benali who fired his effort into the hands of Szczesny, either side it was 2-1.

Radja Nainggolan had an excellent effort from just outside of the area tipped of the crossbar by Albano Bizzarri, which was curling into the top corner. Gianluca Capari tried to test out the Roma goalkeeper from distance but his effort went wide of the target.  Excellent work on the left hand side from Diego Perotti who cut in and crossed onto the head of Edin Dzeko who could only head over from 8 yards out.

Edin Dzeko wasted a chance to claim the hat-trick, lovely play by Mohamed Salah who played in Dzeko but the Bosnian striker could only fire into the side netting on the angle drive. Simone Pepe was brilliantly denied by Szczesny after a quick throw found Gianluca Capari who crossed in for Pepe but he was brilliantly denied from point blank range.

Once again Wojciech Szczesny had to make a smart save to keep his clean sheet intact, the Polish goalkeeper got down well to his left hand side to deny Pescara substitute Valerio Verre. Pescara pulled one back on the hour when a cross in from the right hand side found Ledian Memushaj who hit a low effort into the bottom corner.

Rajda Nainggolan comes inches away from added a third for Roma, pressure from the Roma midfield regained the ball, Nainggolan took aim from 20 yards out and his effort just went wide of the upright. Roma were awarded a penalty after a foul on Diego Perotti by Alessandro Crescenzi, Perotti stepped up and sent Bizzarri the wrong way to restore Roma 2 goal lead.  Pescara pulled another goal back on the 73rd minute when a cross in from the left hand side was dealt with by the Roma defence, it fell to Gianluca Capari who left Wojciech Szczesny flat footed. A life line for Pescara.

With his first contribution of the game after coming on as a sub, Francesco Totti almost scored from a corner. His low curled corner was denied by his feet by the Pescara goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri. Mohamed Salah nearly added a 4th for Roma, Francesco Totti played Salah in with a through ball. Salah effort was smartly parried away by Bizzarri. Kevin Strootman then went closest for Roma, a well worked move down the right hand side was crossed in by Salah, dummied by Dzeko and Strootman low effort was well saved by Bizzarri.

Simone Pepe wasted a golden chance to equalise for Pescara when he woefully fired over the bar from inside the area, better options was available. Roma managed to play out the remaining minutes and pick up a crucial win after Juventus dropped points earlier in the day.
