Roma have mathematically secured themselves a spot in the top three this season regardless of what happens in their derby clash with Lazio on Monday, meaning they will have a shot at competing in the Champions League next term.
The Giallorossi were able to guarantee themselves a place in the top three following Napoli’s 3-1 loss to Juventus on Saturday, which still leaves them four points ahead of the fourth place Partenopei.
Lazio, however, could lose all chances of competing in the Champions League next term if they fail to earn all three points against Roma on Monday, as they would then have to battle Napoli for third place at the San Paolo on the final match day of the 2014-15 campaign on May 31.
Despite their safe situation in the league standings, the Lupi will still be fighting their hardest for a second place finish in order to avoid having to participate in a play-off round, as ending the season in the number two spot will see them directly entered into the group stage.
