Napoli-Roma 2-0: A deserved win for Benitez’s boys!

Data by Opta stats

A deserved win for Benitez’s boys who played a great match against a shocking Roma. Napoli properly pressed AS Roma defensive and midfield line covering the field in a great way. Honestly we have to say that the first half could end up in the same way of the game against Bayern Munich but Napoli missed many other occasions to score.

Torosidis was demolished by Insigne while Higuain kept busy the opposing defense line and scored a great goal at the beginning of the match taking advantage of a rebound following Insigne’s shot. A special mention goes to Calleon because he represents a dangerous winger with amazing technical skills and speed. Napoli’s defender Koulibaly played his best match since the start of the season and completely overshadowed Totti and everyone else was passing on his zone.

In the second half Garcia kept the same 11 players on the field and for a few minutes the team seemed to be a bitter more organized and ready to react. 10 minutes after the beginning of the second 45 minutes Totti was replaced by Destro and Florenzi by Iturbe but from that moment Napoli have found the strength to fight and dominate the game again.

Today some Roma players were evanescent and without a proper mental and physical condition. Nainggolan, Totti, Torosidis, and Pjanic were deeply disappointing but, moreover, they weren’t able to properly face the opposing side.

Napoli deserved to win and probably the final result was a bit tight. The numerical data provided by Opta stats are there to prove that Napoli overshadowed Roma in every zone of the field…

Overall shots: 15 Napoli – 8 Roma

Shots on target: 6 Napoli – 2 Roma

Shots off target: 6 Napoli – 4 Roma

As I always said the data are important only if they are properly interpreted. We can see that the possession of the ball is in Roma’s favor (59.7% vs 40.3%) as well as the percentage of the completed passes (88% vs 81%), however, Roma were never dangerous and their midfield line was unable to properly serve the three strikers on the field. This happened because Napoli kept the lines very close between them and Benitez’s web worked perfectly during the entire 90 minutes.
